With the last updates we have revised all icons in our themes and brought them to the latest version. The older the themes were, the more extensive the changes were. After installing the updates, caching and script minification plugins should be reset so that the icon styles are loaded correctly.
Switched all themes to Genericons Neue
We use the Genericons Icon Font from Automattic in our themes, which is quite similar to the Dashicons in WordPress Core and partly uses the same icons. In our old themes v1 was still included. We have now changed all themes to use the current icons called Genericons Neue.
Changed all themes to use SVG Icons
We also changed the technical implementation of the icons. All icons are now fully embedded as SVG graphics instead of icon fonts. This has a number of advantages, which other authors have better summarized in many articles. The biggest disadvantage of SVGs was the lack of compatibility in Internet Explorer 9-11, which is not a problem nowadays with the retirement of the browser.
Extensibility of the social icon menus
A common request from you was to be able to extend the social icons with custom graphics for special purposes or unknown websites which are not included in our icon set. Therefore, we have now added filter hooks that allow web developers to extend the social icons menus very easily. You can learn more about that in the social icons documentation.
